After months of hullabaloo over the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC’s refusal to register new political party, All Progressives Congress, APC, citing several reasons, the electoral body has finally approved the application by three political parties, the Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN, the All Nigeria Peoples Party, ANPP, and the Congress for Progressive Change, CPC, to merge into one, to be known as the All Progressives Congress, APC.
The approval was communicated to newsmen in Abuja in a statement signed by Abdullahi A. Kaugama, Secretary to the Commission.
“On considering the application, the Commission found that the applicant-parties have met all statutory requirements for the merger, and has accordingly granted their request.
“Consequently, the Commission has approved the withdrawal of the individual certificates of the applicant-parties, and the issuance of a single certificate to the All Progressives Congress,” the statement read in part.
The approval ends the raging battles by various political bodies seeking to be registered as political parties under the acronym of APC.
A prominent member of the new political party and former FCT Minister, Mallam Nasir El Rufai quoted leader of APC Youth Forum, Barrister Ismaila Ahmed on twitter after the approval was made public: “APC is real! Now we have a party to build, an election to win & a country to save. And we have a year to do that.
