Nigeria’s home-based Eagles qualified for the 2014 African Championship (CHAN) for the first time thanks to a 4-3 aggregate scoreline after the second leg of the qualifiers.

Super Eagles team ‘B’ lost 2-0 to the Elephants of Ivory Coast in Abidjan on Saturday after winning the first leg in Kaduna 4-1.

A poor headed back-pass from Azuibuikwe Egwuekwe fell short and Ivory Coast’s Kevin Koelly pounced on the loose ball to put the Elephants ahead of Nigeria in the fourth minute.

Another defensive blunder by Rabiu Ali led to a penalty kick which Koelly again, coolly converted for the second goal all within 24 minutes of the first-half.

After a rather lackluster first-half, the Eagles came back stronger and more composed in the second-half and managed to fend off the Elephants by closing up the midfield.

The Elephants became more desperate as the game wore on and almost crafted out a penalty in the 87th minute when Zougoula fell under a harmless challenge from Godfrey Obaobona.

After three minutes of added time, the Eagles held on to secure a place in January’s tournament that will be hosted by South Africa.
