A businessman who was sentenced to jail for stealing and lying before a Lagos court would rather serve his three-year term than refund the N2 million he stole from one Joy Aikhionbare.

33-year old Dike Okwunna, who resides at 47, Kudebu Street, Ijegun, Lagos was arraigned before an Ijeshatedo Magistrates’ Court where he was tried for stealing after he was arrested by the police at Mushin division following a complaint by Joy that the trader failed to pay the proceeds from the sale of some Horsepower speed boats worth N2.5 million she gave him.

Okwuna, a trader at Ladipo market, Mushin, was given the goods imported by the complainant for sale.

He was accused of selling the goods and converting the money to his own use instead of remitting the money to the complainant who later reported the matter to the police at Mushin division who arrested.

Okwunna reportedly admitted at the police station that he converted the proceeds from the sale of the goods to his own use.

The police consequently charged him to court for the alleged offence of conversion and stealing.

The court found him guilty as charged and he was sentenced accordingly.

Presiding magistrate, Mr. Abegunle Davis ordered him to refund the money he stole from Joy or serve two years imprisonment without an option of fine.

He was also separately sentenced for one year for wasting the time of the court by lying to the court having confessed to the police before he was charged to court.

After the judgment, Okwunna told the court that he preferred to go to prison, thereby foreclosing the refund of the money to the complainant as the court ruled.

The convict said this would enable him keep the money and start a new life after serving the jail term.

He had since been transferred to Kirikiri Prisons in Lagos where he is serving his jail term.

  • He most be a Foolish and useless Man. What is that money compare to his freedom? He may not come out to enjoy the money. Nigeria prison is not worth taking that kind of useless and stupid sacrifice. This is what our leaders has turn ordinary Nigerians into for them to think there is hope in prison that outside the prison. God will help us in this country.
