Dr. Olusegun Mimiko of Ondo State yesterday defended the decision of his administration to construct markets across the state, saying he would not be distracted by criticism from opposition parties, who question the move.
The governor made this known during the commissioning of Moferere Modern Market which comprises of 412 open stalls and 364 lock-up stalls.
Also, the state government disbursed N15million as loan to 300 market women for their businesses.
Mimiko is to commission four other high brow markets in towns across the state in the next one week as part of his administration’s urban renewal programme.
According to him, “It is the least we can do for women empowerment, the very least we can do to restore the dignity of our women traders, and reduce pandemic poverty in our communities.
”We may need to ask the question, why is government venturing into market reconstruction and renovation? Or why do we care so much for market women?
”My response is simple. Why not? Why should this long-neglected and overlooked segment of the population not be given at least a taste of the government they helped vote into office?”
