The Sports Minister and Chairman the National Sports Commission (NSC) Bolaji Abdullahi, had a closed-door meeting with the board of 15 of the national sports federations at the Abuja National Stadium, on Thursday, to discuss the strategies and budget toward 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland.
Abdullahi disclosed to Sports Writers before the meeting that only medal hopefuls will represent the nation at the 20th Commonwealth Games which begins from July 23 through to August 3, meaning only athletes capable of winning medals will be selected.
He said: “The reason we are having this (meeting) is to ensure that; we start our preparation early and that we are deliberate with our approach to the Commonwealth Games.
“This is not another jamboree,” said Abdullahi. “We are going to ensure that every single sport that goes to the Commonwealth Games has a very good chance of bringing medals to Nigeria.”
On the selection of sports for the Commonwealth Games, Abdullahi told the Federations of Table Tennis, Badminton and Boxing to ensure they convince the ministry why they should be included, following their poor performance at the Delhi game.
