Tears flowed freely on Wednesday in the Senate Chamber as Senators paid their last respect to their fallen colleague, the late Sen. Pius Ewherido (DPP-Delta).

Ewherido, who represented Delta Central Senatorial District, died on June 30 at the National Hospital in Abuja at the age of 50.

In his valedictory speech, Senate President David Mark described the late Ewherido as a highly intelligent lawmaker who contributed persuasively, brilliantly and vibrantly to debates in the Senate.

“Given the impact Ewherido made in his family, his hometown, his constituency, the Senate and the country at large, it is safe to say that he is not dead as his legacy is there.

“The sudden demise of Ewherido is traumatic.  Death is inevitable and we all know it, but whenever it occurs we are still taken by surprise.”

Mark said that Ewherido’s death was painful and untimely, but added that “he demonstrated patriotism and nationalism while he was alive.’’

Sen. Margery Okadigbo (PDP-Anambra) advised the widow of the deceased, Doye, to be strong for the sake of her children, adding, “God will definitely take care of them.’’

She also advised her believe in God.

Senate Leader Victor Ndoma-Egba (PDP-Cross River), who moved the motion that the Senate should pay tribute to Ewherido, said he was a “quintessential cerebral and insightful legislator’’.

He said Ewherido would be greatly missed by the Senate, and prayed that God should grant his soul eternal rest.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the senators thereafter observed a one-minute silence and filed past the late senator’s casket.

The Senate then adjourned to July 23 as a mark of respect for the late lawmaker who will be buried on Friday. (NAN)
