Nigeria Volleyball Federation (NVBF) has called for the establishment of a functional league for the sport in the country.

The Chairman, Technical Committee of the Federation, Tony Oghuma-Eghiemai disclosed that this would allow for better performance during championship.

“Without it, there will not be a sustainable growth for the game,” Oghuma-Eghiemai said in Abuja on Wednesday.

“Normally we should know that we should have a league, so as to enhance the development of the game. But the problem is, who funds it.

“We have tried as much as possible to get sponsors for it, but it has not yielded any result.

“Until we have a functional league, we are not going anywhere with volleyball in this country. If we can get sponsors, it will really help us.”

The technical committee chairman however commended the Nigerian under-20 women volleyball team at the FIVB Women’s U-20 World Championship, held in Brno, Czech Republic.

At the 10-day championship, the Nigerian team lost all its seven matches played and finished last among the 20 teams which participated.

“From what I saw, as the leader of the delegation to Czech Republic, it was a good performance on the part of our players, considering the level of preparations we had.

“Apart from the fact that the team was in camp for about six weeks, we had no friendly match to really put them to test, it was just a local one we had with the Defence Headquarters team in Abuja.

“To a large extent, it was a good experience for them because they played against high-spirited teams which really gave them good exposure and I was impressed with what I saw,” he said.

  1. wonderful speech from from the Chairman but it keeps me amazed that there is a volleyball body in this country and only one tournament a year is what we can boast of. secondly, i think one of the obligations of the NVBF is to get sponsors to promote the sport of volleyball, are they not working or not working well? volleyball is dieing in this country and we still have people that can say they are the leaders of such association in Nigeria? i have my face covered.

  2. Thanks a lot to the chairman. But I would love to say Nigeria as a whole should try and enhance volleyball playing in our country. I love this game so much and I Will like to join any team in Nigeria.thanks
