Suarez said Liverpool ‘promised’ he could leave this summer if they failed to qualify for the Champions League.

“I gave absolutely everything last season. Now all I want is for Liverpool to honour our agreement,” Suarez said.

In an interview giving to the Guardian and Daily Telegraph Spanish-based journalists, the striker said he had the opportunity to leave Liverpool last summer, but chose to stay and has now urged the club to allow him leave for a Champions League side with Arsenal being the only interested suitor at the moment.

“Last year I had the opportunity to move to a big European club and stayed on the understanding that if we failed to qualify for the Champions League the following season I’d be allowed to go.

“I am, 26, I need to be playing in the Champions League. I feel I have done enough to be playing in the Champions League at this stage of my career. Now there is an option for me to do that and I want very much to take it” he added.

Liverpool, who finished seventh in the Premier League last season, had earlier in the summer rejected two bids from the Gunners with the recent £40m plus £1 expected to trigger the clause injected into the 26-year-old Uruguayan contract which allows him to speak to suitors.

“I don’t feel betrayed but the club promised me something a year ago, just as I promised them that I would stay and try everything possible to get us into the Champions League,” he said.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger insisted that the Gunners will not be drawn into a public auction for their primary target, Suarez, but has now said the club has put the move “on standby.”

“At the moment the situation is on standby,” Wenger told Al Jazeera. “I really don’t know (what the latest is regarding Suarez), that’s for sure, I really don’t know what will be decided by Liverpool.”

Red boss Brendan Rodgers said Arsenal’s offer remains well short of Liverpool’s valuation.

“If Arsenal want the player they have to produce the value for the player,” Rodgers said last month.

Suarez, who scored 30 goals in 44 matches for the club last term, has not traveled with the squad for a pre-season friendly against Valerenga in Norway because of a foot injury. He is due to have a scan in the next 24 hours.

The striker signed from Ajax in January 2011 for £22.7m and signed a long-term contract extension in August 2012.
