Anzhi Mahkachkala’s attacking midfielder Willian is on the verge of a record £30m move to Tottenham Hotspur after the Brazilian undergone a medical at White Hart Lane on Tuesday.
Spurs are confident of completing a deal for the 25-year-old as coach Andre Villas-Boas also confirmed on Wednesday that contract talks are in progress.
The midfielder, who joined Anzhi for a reported fee of £30m from Ukrainian side Shakhtar Donetsk, has attracted interest from Liverpool this summer but favours the move to London.
By the time the deal must have been completed, Willian becomes Spurs’ fifth signing this summer.
Spurs had already spent £57.6m this summer, on landing Paulinho from Corinthian for £17m, Nacer Chadli from FC Twente for £7m, Roberto Soldado from Valencia for £26m and 25-year-old Toulouse midfielder Etienne Capoue for £9m.
If Spurs pull off the signing, it would be the third time this summer they have broken their transfer record following the appointment of Franco Baldini as director of football.
Russian club Anzhi are willing to offload Willian in their bid to cut cost after a change in strategy by the owner.
