A Michigan City, Indiana man hit by an Amtrak train going 110 mph has suffered only minor injuries.
Darryle See, 22, was walking along the track at 11:30 a.m. Friday, listening to music on earphones when the Chicago-bound train slammed into him, the Northwest Indiana Times reported.
The horn on the train was sounded multiple times, but See couldn’t hear. Despite the conductor slamming on the breaks, See was still hit at 110 mph, sending him flying 20 feet away from the track and his shoes 150 feet away.
“I’m doing OK,” See said from his hospital bed. “Not terrific, but I’m doing OK.”
Police Maj. John Boyd said in his 20 years of law enforcement, he has never heard of anyone surviving a hit from a high-speed train.
“The conductor said it was a straight-on hit,” Boyd said.
See was alert and speaking with police, but said he doesn’t recall being hit and doesn’t remember walking along the track, according to NBC Chicago.
”He was conscious and alert, sitting up and talking to us. I never would have guessed he was the victim,” Boyd said.
See suffered fractures in his pelvis, non-life threatening injuries to his neck, and a broken arm.
On Sunday, 26-year-old Michigan City man Randall Williams was struck by a train and died of blunt force trauma.
