Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga has pulled out of this month’s US Open, citing injury.

Since withdrawing from a second-round Wimbledon 2013 match in June, the 28-year-old world number eight has not fully recovered from a knee problem.

“The thinking is simple,” Tsonga told his website. “The doctors told me that it would be at least two months for my tendon to partially heal and five months to be completely healed.

“Two months takes me to US Open. It would be stupid to go there knowing full well that I have no chance because I’m not prepared enough.”

“I have to take care of me and make sure I can play 100%,” Tsonga added.

The US Open begins on 26 August at Flushing Meadows, New York.
