The Scot, who stepped down in May after 27 years at Old Trafford, has had the honour bestowed on him by Trafford Council.

The local authority controlled by the conservative Labour party also plans to rename Waters Reach Road near Old Trafford Sir Alex Ferguson Way.

“I am delighted to accept this honour from Trafford Council,” said Ferguson.

“When I arrived at Old Trafford in 1986 I had little idea of the journey that awaited me.

“Over quarter of a century later, to receive the Freedom of the Borough of Trafford and to have a part of Trafford carrying my name is truly humbling.”

Council leader Matt Colledge said the tribute to Ferguson was in recognition of his achievements as Manchester United manager.

Ferguson won 13 league titles, 2 Champions League trophies, 5 FA Cups, 4 League Cups as manager of the Premier League champions.
