The Baggies had earlier seen a £3.5m bid rejected but returned with an improved offer for the Nigeria international, who signed a three-year deal, before the summer transfer window closed on Monday.

The Midland club beats off interest from Stoke City to the penmanship of the 25-year-old who featured 157 times for the Merseyside Blues and scored 22 goals.

West Brom also succeeded in signing Benin Republic international frontman Stephanie Sessegnon from Sunderland for an undiclosed club-record fee, but failed to lure back Romelu Lukaku from Stamford Bridge after the big Belgian enjoyed a successful spell with manager Steve Clark last season.

Sessegnon, 29, has penned down a three-year deal, after passing his medical on Monday afternoon.

Morgan Amalfatino also switched to ‘The Hawthorns” from French Ligue 1 side Marserille as embattled striker Osaze Odemwingie moved to Cardiff city.

Former Nigeria under-23, Anichebe, has capped 11 times for Nigeria with a goal to his credit, in a 3-0 friendly victory over Kenya in 2011. He has since placed his international career on hold and chose to focus on club football.

West Brom are bottom of the Premier League table with one point from three games.
