The Auyo Local Government in Jigawa said on Tuesday that it distributed 2,520 goats to women in the area.

The council’s secretary, Alhaji Muhammad Adamu, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Auyo that the council disbursed more than N870,000 to widows, orphans and the most vulnerable in the community.

He said that the animals were given to the beneficiaries under the Community-Based Agriculture and Rural Development Programme (CBARDP), supported by the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD).

Adamu said some 840 women were given three goats each while 60 widows received N10,000 each to enable them to engage in productive activities.

The secretary said that the beneficiaries were trained on animal husbandry and poultry production.

He said the gesture was to reduce poverty and enhance wealth creation among rural dwellers.

”The gesture is to empower women and encourage them to develop their enterprising skills,” he said.

The secretary said the council had also conducted animal vaccination, to control diseases and encourage livestock production. (NAN)
