Some students and youth organizations converged on the northern city of Kaduna Saturday to celebrate Major Hamza Al-Mustapha’s release from prison and ask him to run for elections in 2015.

They gathered at the Murtala Square, Kaduna to honour the former Chief Security Officer (CSO) to late Head of State, Sani Abacha, who was incarcerated for close to 15 years for his alleged role in the murder of Alhaja Kudirat Abiola before he was acquitted by the Court of Appeal in Lagos some few months ago.

The gathering, which attracted several hundreds of people including some Kaduna based politicians, was tagged ‘Almustapha unity gathering’.

The youth chanted solidarity songs and flew banners in support of Mr. Al-Mustapha, under the watchful eyes of security officials.

Mr. Al-Mustapha, who arrived the venue at about 1:09 p.m., was visibly elated by the waiting crowd and had to be squeezed through to reach his seat.

He is yet to declare his membership of any political party although he enjoys massive support among youths in the North.

One of the organizers of the rally, Ismail Mohammed, said Mr. Al-Mustapha is being celebrated because he is considered a leader and a fighter of justice.

“We are going to push him to contest an election in 2015,” Mr. Mohammed said.
