A blind golfer is celebrating after hitting an astonishing hole-in-one during a tournament.

Jim O’Brien, 71, is believed to be only the third totally blind person to have hit a hole-in-one in England and Wales in the last 20 years.

The OAP, from Market Harborough in Leicestershire, achieved the feat on the sixth hole at Hindhead Golf Club, Surrey, on Wednesday.

The retired charity fund-raiser was taking part in a tournament with other blind players, guided by sighted coaches, when he struck lucky on the three par, 139 yard long hole.

Scots-born Jim He said: “Every time I on walk on a green, I think about getting a hole-in-one.

“It’s every golfer’s dream but more so if you’re totally blind.

“When I teed off, I thought I’d hit the ball quite nicely. It was just thinking ’Let’s hope it makes the green’.

“After a few seconds, the guys I was with said ‘It’s in the hole’.

“It was a great feeling – it’s unbelievable.

“I celebrated with a large glass of red wine.”
