Nigeria’s Isaac ‘the grenade’ Ekpo lost in his bid to claim the WBO super middleweight belt from current champion Robert Stieglitz of Germany on Saturday.
The 30-year-old Nigerian boxer, who featured at the 2004 Athens Olympics, had hoped to stun his German opponent in his first bout in Europe.
But Stieglitz (46-3, 26 KOs) hammered out a twelve round unanimous decision over Ekpo (22-2, 16 KO’s) at the Exhibition Hall EINS in Leipzig, Germany.
The first (Waleska Roldan) and second (Andre Van Grootenbruel) judges scored the fight 118-110 each, while the third (Frank Michael Maass) scored it 119-109.
It was Stieglitz’s second defence of the title he claimed in March and his speed and work rate kept the harder punching Ekpo off-balance.
Ekpo has not beaten any leading contender but is ranked seventh on the WBO’s list.
