The National Chairman of the Association of Local Governments in Nigeria (ALGON), Chief Nwabueze Okafor, says that Enugu State runs the best Local Government system in the country.
Okafor told newsmen in Enugu on Thursday that contrary to some opinions, Gov Sullivan Chime’s administration was not tampering with councils’ funds.
According to him, Enugu State is an example of a Local Government system that is free from undue interference, especially in terms of funds and resources.
“The administration of Gov. Sullivan Chime has not been tampering with funds meant for the 17 Local Government Areas in Enugu State.
“I also wish to state that the administration had been consistent in conducting elections in the state since it came on board six years ago.”
Okafor said that he had in several fora used the state as an example of how the Local Government system had succeeded.
The ALGON boss, who is also Chairman of the Enugu South Local Government described a publication, accusing Chime of tampering with councils’ fund as the “height of mischief.
“The good thing is that it was published as a personal opinion, not the opinion of the newspaper or else it would have been actionable.
“But I think I have stated it at various fora in the past, even within our general assembly at Nike Lake, where I made a power point presentation on how the Local Government succeeds, using Enugu State as a model.
“Even in various interviews, I always praise the government of Enugu State, not because I am from the state, but because of the system they have put in place since this administration of Sullivan Chime started in 2007”.
He said that a lot of things had been put on ground in the different Local Government Areas of the state to justify that nobody tampered with councils’ funds.
Okafor called on other State Governments holding back funds meant for Local Governments to release the funds so that they councils would carry out their responsibilities. (NAN)
