The duo of Shehu Lawal and Kehinde Alade failed to reach the quarter-finals of the Lagos Tennis Championships Futures 2, losing to Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan and Ruan Roelofse respectively in the second round at the Lagos lawn Tennis Club, Onikan, Lagos.
Both Lawal and Alade were gunning for Nigeria’s first appearance in the quarter-finals since 2009, but the former failed to withstand a fired up number three seed from India, losing 6-0, 6-3 to Nedunchezhiyan.
At the same time of Lawal’s defeat, South Africa’s Roelofse proved a difficult match for Alade in Court Two, ending the Nigerian’s hope with a 6-1,6-0 win.
“I was not happy losing this match to Ruan, but I must admit that he’s a very good opponent and he proved that in the match. I tried to win a game in the first set, but in the second set, everything just went against me,” Alade said after the loss.
The Futures Two campaign of the 2013 First City Monument Bank (FCMB) Governor’s Cup ends on Saturday.
