There was jubilation yesterday in Jalingo, Taraba State capital and environs following the airing of a video clip on the state-owned television showing recuperating Governor Danbaba Suntai on a fishing expedition.

Gov. Suntai, who entered a red Range Rover Sports HSC from Government House Jalingo unassisted, to his fish pond located near the School of Nursing at Jalingo Bye-pass in the state capital, appeared to be recovering well especially when compared to the image that greeted the nation when he was aided to disembark from the chartered private jet that conveyed him from the USA to Abuja last August.

The governor, decked in a grey sports suit, was accompanied by members of his family including his wife, Hauwa; their twin children, his younger brother – Babangida Suntai, security agents, friends, aides, among them Senior Special Assistant (SSA) on Media and Publicity, Mr. Sylvanus Giwa and Chief Press Secretary, Alhaji Hassan Mijinyawa and newsmen.

His over one hour expedition which yielded no catch, led him to say a joke that he was cheated by the fishes.

“Kifin sun chuche ni, dun sun riga sun ci abinci,” he said in Hausa, meaning: “the fishes cheated me because they are already fed.”

The governor was intermittently teased by his wife over his inability to successfully make a catch and when she almost slipped into the pond at a point during the fishing expedition, it was Suntai’s turn to return the favour.

“If you fall into the water I will fish you out”, he said.

At the end of his first major public outing in the state since his return from the U.S, Gov. Suntai promised to return to the fish farm in a few days, this time to catch as fishes as possible.
