Following Wednesday night’s stampede at the Ilofa road home of the late strongman of Kwara politics, Dr. Olusola Saraki at the Government Reservation Area (GRA), Ilorin, Kwara State, which left at least four people dead – mostly women – and several others injured, the scion of the late politician, Senator Bukola Saraki, has suspended all activities at the ‘Charity House’ till further notice.
Scores of Peoples’ Democratic Party, PDP supporters had thronged the Saraki’s residence to receive their annual Sallah largesse from the former governor, who now represents Kwara Central in the Senate. But the situation turned ugly when those on queue were reportedly trampled upon by the surging crowd in a mad rush for the items that were being distributed.
Unconfirmed reports say the death toll has now risen to 20.
In a statement yesterday in Ilorin, Senator Saraki expressed deep sadness on the death of the PDP supporters during the stampede in Ilorin.
He said: “I’m deeply saddened to receive the news about the loss of some of our party members, who were stampeded after the Sallah festivities at the Charity House.
“Our party’s strength resides solely in the support from party faithful, which gives us huge confidence always – it’s very painful to have lost these party faithful.
“I commiserate with the families of the deceased and pray that Allah grant us the strength to bear the loss. To those responding to treatment, I wish them speedy recovery”.
Consequently, he announced that “All other activities scheduled at the Charity House have been suspended till further notice as a mark of respect for the departed”.
