The faction of Peoples’ Democratic Party, PDP, led by Alhaji Abubakar Kawu Baraje yesterday suffered another major blow as the Federal Capital Territory Administration, FCTA, sealed the Adamawa State Governor’s Lodge located in the exclusive Maitama District, which served as its temporary secretariat citing alleged use of the property for political party activities.
In a press statement issued Saturday, the FCTA said it sealed the lodge because of a purported ‘abuse of the Abuja Master Plan’ by the Adamawa State government.
The statement which was signed by the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Minister – Sen. Bala Mohammed’s Chief Press Secretary, Muhammad Hazat Sule, said converting the building into political party office had negated “the spirit of urban planning and (was) causing untold hardship” to residents of the area.
“All the Governor’s Lodges in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja are enshrined in the Abuja Master Plan to be for residential purposes, but not for political party secretariat as the Adamawa State Governor’s Lodge is currently being used,” Hazat said in the statement.
“The Governor’s Lodge as it is today, is being used as political party office, thereby negating the spirit of urban planning and causing untold hardship on the residents dwelling in that area of the city, as well as inflicting undue pressure on the infrastructure and services therein,” he added.
The minister’s spokesperson added that the FCT Administration was determined in its resolve to rid the “entire 250 square kilometers of the Federal Capital City” of illegal structures and changes to land use policy.
“It may be noted that any change of Land Use is usually accompanied with over-stretching of facilities that were planned for a certain number of people, apart from also causing high volume of traffic with its attendant problems.
“The administration wishes to assure that all actions by a person or group of persons that inflict pains on the residents, whether directly or indirectly, would not be condoned as government is meant to serve and protect the rights of all.
“The FCTA will continue to protect the Abuja environment and the sanctity of the Abuja Master Plan in line with the dreams of its founding fathers, believing that such plans were meant to be obeyed and adhered to,” the statement added.
It would be recalled that on September 9, the police, purportedly acting on the orders of the Presidency had sealed off the official secretariat building of the New PDP located on No. 4, Oyi Crescent, off Ibrahim Babangida Boulevard in Maitama District hence the relocation to the Adamawa governor’s lodge.
It was not immediately clear if the latest action of government was politically motivated as both factions of the ruling party and the presidency are disposed to finding an amicable resolution to the political crisis that has torn the PDP apart.
However, in its reaction to the latest development, the New PDP spokesman, Chukwuemeka Eze said, ‘We are aware of the seal-off of our office. We are studying the situation and will react appropriately”.
