United States of America defender Oguchi Onyewu has joined Championship side Queens Park Rangers (QPR).

The 31-year-old centre-back joins coach Harry Redknapp’s side as a free agent, having left Sporting Lisbon at the end of the 2012/13 season.

“I’m thrilled to get this period over with and finally secure my future,” he told QPR’s website.

He helped Sporting Lisbon reach the semi-finals of the 2011/12 Europa League in his first season with the Portuguese club after signing a three-year contract.

He featured for La Liga outfit Malaga on a season-long loan in the 2012/13 season before Lisbon terminated his contract by mutual consent last summer.

“I had a really good feeling about QPR from the moment I arrived here. I’ve been welcomed by the club and I feel good here already,” he added.

“I want to help the club get back to the Premier League- that’s why I’ve come here.”

Onyewu, who has featured for USA at various youth levels, has 68 international caps for the USMNT (scoring six goals) and represented the country at the 2006 and 2010 World Cup.
