Bauchi State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Mr Sunday Henry Olatunji, who confirmed the incident yesterday, said the accident involved 16 people with only two sustaining injuries, but no death was recorded.
The FRSC boss blamed over-speeding and improper overtaking for the accident and advised motorists to always obey traffic rules.
It was learnt that the accident occurred along Gombe road; about 25 kilometers from Shafuri village in Bauchi State when one of the escort vehicles in Mr. Umar’s convoy attempted to overtake another in front of it and in the process collided with one of the cars in the Emir’s convoy.
The acting governor was reportedly en route Bauchi State to pay a condolence visit to Governor Isa Yuguda, who lost his younger sister last week, while the Emir of Bauchi’s convoy was on its way to the Gombe International Airport when the incident occurred.
Convoys of government functionaries have been known to endanger other road users as they often run at neck-breaking speed with flagrant disregard for traffic rules and regulations.
