ASUU STRIKE: Mixed Reactions Trails Federal Government’s Threat PLUS See What Students Have To Say

The Federal Government has given ASUU 1 week ultimatum to call off the lingering strike that has been on since the 1st of July 2013 and failure to do so will result in the loss of their jobs.

Meanwhile the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) on Thursday described the threat by the federal government to sack lecturers if they don’t return to classroom as empty threat that could not hold water.

While some think this move by government will further aggravate the situation. A lecturer, unlike other workers, cannot be easily replaced.

Read some students opinion below:

If the government thinks there are available graduates on ground that will be engaged to teach, who will take care of the post-graduate students? Government should stop dancing to the gallery and do what is right so that our universities will be re-opened.
Khalifa Shariff, Faculty of Law, BUK

I think what the Federal Government is trying to do is very wrong, because this is portraying to the world that Nigerian leaders do not even understand what “knowledge” is all about. Imagine how you can run university education without professors and doctorate degree holders. But ok fine, we the students are waiting to see our new lecturers and we hope Mr. President will be among the new recruit lecturers and we pray for him to pass the screening and interview.
Yahaya Shehu Mohammed, BUK

I believe what ASUU is demanding is neither too much nor unrealistic. So if the government wants to sack the lecturers, they should also expel us as we are solidly in support of the lecturer’s struggle for better education in this country. The government should just implement the 2009 agreement it entered with ASUU and stop playing with our future. We are tired.
Najibullahi Nuhu Abdullahi , BUK

What’s your take on the Federal Government’s Threat?

  1. Who said that is all our students have to say? Who said a professor can’t be employed? Who said, professors won’t come back from retirment to serve if called upon? Who said, other foreigners can’t be employed? The point is that both parties should be reasonable cause nobody or group is irreplacable.

  2. FG shouldn’t deviate from the truth while they know it. This is a really empty and unreasonable threat ever a country can made; it’s funny and just like a child play. Let the president be reasonable please and try his possible best to meet ASUU’s demand because the resources is there. Strike here and there doesn’t speak well of him and this is the more reasons a lot of people use the term “incapable” to describe him.

  3. Asuu is nt requesting for any new outrageous demand. Asuu is just requesting for their 4month old salaries dat dis d same FG make dem to be on strike,FG shld release d 200billion for 2012\2013 before dey will call off d strike and dis is november ending already december is around d corner n implementaion of d aggrement by anthorny general of d federation.i can vivdly recall wen asuu went on two weeks warning strike around april dis year but dis FG remain adamant till dey went on indefinate n comprehensive strike all for quality education for whom dat can nt avoid private university n now sacking dem is d answer to their request all just bcos dey dnt wnt to implement d agreement through written but for mouth only.FG shld let anthorny general of d federation sign d aggrement if dey can turn it down again.Wat i just know is dat GOD almighty has nt create some1 he can nt deal wit. FG is nt more dan d creator of heaven n earth.

  4. hey N.k, yes they can be replaced dos foreigners, dos retired and so on! but won’t dey be paid, if u are a student I believe u would understand was education stands 4 and u would knw dat wat d assu are fighting 4 is going 2 help dis country 4 d best . wat is d use of schooling wen its not respectable outside d walls of nigeria, no facility nd so on. lectures are nt been payed well and etc. we should understand dat wen it cums to neccessary and important tins in dis country d fg tends 2 nt giv a care,y because dey are nt affected nd don’t care wu dos! I believe wat d fg says is truly an empty threat nd am waiting 2 see dos new lectureras dey did be bringing on.

  5. If Badluck Jonathan was nt educated,I’ll say dat’s d reason for all his unreasonable comments bt he’s only more interested in his prodigal sons of PDP neglecting the most important sector in d country.I wnt to get back to skul bt I also wnt d agreement implementd cos tis 4 d gud of d education sector.BEJ is a liar by telling us dat he had released 100b wen he hasnt released a faden…Thief!

  6. Its funny when times go wrong in Nigeria. It’s only that time that you will find out that we lack technical know-how and professional handle to it. ASUU’s demand in itself is totally unreasonable and avaricious.Where on earth do people get paid for going on strike? Until now,I never knew that ASUU and ASUP are really functional. Is it only when it comes to money, that they come into play? Where have they been all this while that lecturers are exploiting students in the name of handouts, textbooks, sexually assaulting our ladies and secretly dragging our youngmen into cultism? Nobody saw this? Or is ASUU only a money-driven body? ASUU has lost her essence and purpose. If they truly know what they want, can they provide a detailed analysis of what they intend to do when this 100billion is disbursed to them. I just wish Nigerian students will be partakers in the sharing of this sum if FG finally grants it because we all know that the money is for sharing and not for any structural improvement like they claimed. If at all it was for this purpose, why didnt they use the money that schools gain from POSTUME to run their thing?

  8. FG should stop politicizing our education system and face the reality,no matter how challenging it may appear before them. And president Goodluck Jonathan know that,if Nigerian education sector collapses in his time history will never ever be kind to him.I think he should go ahead and impliment 2009 agreement reached with ASUU because the union has the interest of this Nation at heart.I hereby urge ASUU to be strong, courageous and never be afraid until they acheive what they believe in,because if they compromise posterity will not forgive them.

  9. The FG is very stupid and focus. By now, i ought to be expecting my NYSC call-up letter. But what’s the case now; i’m yet to complete my project and last semester?! What nonesense!
If the FG wanted to show its ‘corrupt-ness’ by shamelessly waving off the truth and trying to use force in settling this case, why didn’t do so on time? Why now?
Besides, ASUU is just for what is fighting for. Give them what you’ve signed as theirs.
I was angry and frustrated when the strike started… But right now, i am willing to join ASUU in my little way to FIGHT!!!
It is unfortunate that i’m among does at the receiving-end of the battle. Well, in every sincere/unequal battle, someone/people must get the injury for others coming to enjoy.
I MUST confess that EDUCATION in Nigeria is less than reasonable…
    FG, MEET ASUU’s DEMANDS!!!

  10. Mehn I don’t knw what u all are saying, aren’t u all tired of home? Am jux seeing useless comments here insulting the federal gov, even wen u all don’t follow news, to be frank we all know that AASUU won’t do anything even if 1billion is given to them, seriously all senior lecturers are jux looking for their pocket nd who suffers it? we the students. ain’t five months enough? I hate wen blind students comment rubbish….. All I want is to go back too schooool… Because of the death of their member they postponed d meeting they were meant to hav indefinitely, nd went behind close doors to ask for irrelevant things from federal government.. Y don’t dey do the meetings live lets c? Mehn let dey dissolve AASUU dey are not considerate… Also pls if u don’t know much just shut up and don comment coz u don’t knw what is on board….. I luv nigeria nd I luv mr President… This is what Asuu needs..

  12. I hear u, I dnt think dats every students opinion, its a very biased sample, im a statistician n only dis writeup shows hw many educated illiterates we hv in our country, all student from same skul wen we hv hundreds of skul in Nigeria n u want to conclude on dat?… Fg continue with ur threaths n make sure u actualize it, dre re many jobless proffessors dat hv nt been injected into d system, it luks like Assu is biting more dan it cn chew, pls b considerate at least, students hv always been by u, bt it seems like u dnt even care abt us anylonger.

  13. God bless u barnabas, u ve said it all, it luks like some ppl commenting here re illiterates or de dnt follow d news, de jst talk cos de want to, if u follow d news u ll knw dat Assu is jst making foolish demands, u want to b paid wen u didnt wrk? Haba!!! Bt dis same pple will say de re fighting for justice wen de demselves re violating it, abeg its getting too much, FG is free to do anytin it wishes, lets even ask dos pple talking for Assu, do u knw hw it feels to hv authority n for peace to reign u beg continously n dat small rat u re begging is feeling like king, wen he can b fluashed in a second, If I were FG I would b frustrated by nw, Assu we re tired of begging, I even think it shld b dissolved

  14. Sum people need nt 2comment on dis cos they lack intellectual ability, for me dy FG has really tried dia best nd dy dnt hve any alternative dan to do dis, abeg oga GEJ carry go i dy for ur back.hw did u expect someone 2receive salary witout doing anytin?are we doing any free donation here?if ASUU is considerate dy should resume school most especially for dy sake of student.

  15. Student shld be aware of nigeria labour law before u can comment on asuu salaries cos asuu embark on an indefinate strike for d failure of FG to honour an agreement dey fail to implement. FG is d cause of d strike n dey must pay their salaries according to nigeria labour law. Dnt forget dat dis salaries has been already budgeted for dis year,

  16. whoever posted this news is paranoid…. Info naija went to only BUK where all the abokis in support of fagge are residing to generalise what nigerian students have to say… well they got it all wrong bcos we here in ABU are in support of FG

  17. i hve read many of the comment here so far. Bt i like to ask this:why wount FG pay thier salaries ?? who caused the strike ??. some of you student are just interested in going bak to sku so u finish up ur exaMZ,project ETC and go for ur NYSC. why are you selfish ??? now u say ASUU is selfish ,indirectly do u know u ar as selfish as u think as ASUU is ?? hv u forgoten that ur younger once or kids may also bcomin to this same institutions ??? u wnt them to graduate poorly ?? u wnt them to graduate without thier certificate not honored or respected in any other part of the world just as yours is right now ?? ??? cmon !! lets wake up to reality. dnt blame asuu THEY are fighting for the future of the nigerian student !!!!!! think ! think !!! think !!!!! stop blaming asuu. studnt like you cant mke this country move foward and you cant even cntribute to the growth and develomnt of the soceity where u com from. this kind of stndnt blaming asuu ar stdnt wt no vision for the society where they com from. now u say asuu is selfish.. aw long shaal we cntinue like dis being dceved all the time by Nigerian gvt ??? what is wrng in implemnting an greemnt once entered into ?? FG dnt gve a fuk of u . pls leave asuu alone !!!!

  18. ASUU has been taking the FG for granted…GEJ humbled himself to meet 13 hot hours with Asuu after which they promised to call off the strike! Holding congresses in their various places, they voted it shd b called off…Iyayi’s death, and now a fresh demand? what prompted that?
is Asuu now merging with parties that are there to frustrate this government…
they r taking Nigerian students, FG of Nigeria and Nigerians for granted.

  19. What is d assurance dt if ds money requested by asuu is given,we dey make use of it? Won’t there b embezzlement? Fuel subsidy money hasn’t really served its purpose. Hmmmn! Is asuu really fighting for our students or their interest? May God have his way.

  20. I think assu is a body after it’s own personal pocket how can they demand for such an amount of money yes the educational standard in nigeria is low but #1.5 trillion naira is totally unacceptable it is when it comes 2 d issue of money they fly out of their nets like birds were have they been all this while nigerian student are forced 2 pay for handouts and text books if u don’t pay u’ll fail dat course when our young girls have to sleep with a lecturer to pass his course or she fails where students have 2 join cults all in d name of protection…..I must say am so disappionted in assu the fg has played it’s own part and assu should stop being greedy and accept her offer how on earth do dey expect the fg 2 pay them 4 going 2 strke I mean if all organistions in nigeria gets paid 4 embarking on strike what will nigeria look like
