A House of Representatives member, Hon. Dakuku Peterside, representing Andoni/Opobo Nkoro Federal Constituency of Rivers State, has described the merger between some Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) governors and All Progressives Congress (APC) as a welcome development.

Hon. Peterside, who made this known in Port Harcourt on Tuesday while reacting to the defection, said it would benefit the Nigerian people to a great extent by ensuring a level playing ground for democratization.

He added that “it is a watershed in our democratic journey which will rekindle democracy and democratic culture”.

The lawmaker, who is the Chairman, House Committee on Oil and Gas (Downstream), commended the governors’ courage in what he described as “a defence of democracy’’, said the people would not be taken for granted again.

In the same vein, Mr Benneth Lemchi, the former ANPP gubernatorial candidate in Imo State, described the defection of the governors as a rescue mission.

Lemchi said the move, which was in the interest of Nigerians, would rescue Nigeria’s democracy from the grips of electoral charade.

He described the seven governors as champions of democracy, whose legacy would forever be respected.

“This is a new dawn for our democracy, it shows that the ruling party has failed and must sit up”.

Chief Tony Okocha, the Chief of Staff, Government House, Port Harcourt, described the move as the best thing that had happened to Nigeria’s democracy.

“In recent times, it is the best thing that happened to our democracy, because it is a merger of like minds”.

Okocha assured that Rivers people would massively support their governor as they would also join him.
