The Sultan was speaking when he received the Chairman, Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) and Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi and other state governors, who were in Sokoto State for a two-day retreat.
“You cannot have peace if there is no justice. You cannot have peace if you don’t have good governance, and good governance comes from fear of God,” he stated.
The Sultan while counseling the state governors on leadership, said, “You could be a Christian, you could be an animist, you could be a Muslim, you could be a Jew but leadership is one, because leadership is a trust from God Almighty to you. We shouldn’t think we will be here forever or we will be in public office forever or we will be leaders forever. A day will come when you will leave that position. So while you are there, you should do your best”.
He also urged the governors to use the NGF as a platform to foster the bond of unity among the governors, rather than one that would divide them. He stressed that it was only when they were united that they would adequately provide the dividends of democracy to the people.
Stressing the importance of understanding among Nigerians, the royal father said, “It’s only when you come together that you understand one another, and understanding one another is much better than tolerating one another because when I understand you, I am empowered to work with you based on mutual trust, based on knowing who you are, where you come from and what religion you profess.”
The Sultan also advised the governors to be very prudent in the utilization of state funds.
