Super-Sand Eagles Ready to Defend Copa Lagos.

Nigeria’s Super Sand Eagles say they are ready to win a third successive Copa Lagos Beach Soccer Championships which begins on December 13 and ends 15.

Copa Lagos 2013 will be a fusion of the Beach Soccer matches followed by fashion shows and music concerts featuring live performances by some of Nigeria’s foremost artistes.

The captain of the team, Isiaka Olawale, who plays for Dolphins in the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL), said the team is fired up to retain the title it previously defended in 2012 with impressive performances against notable beach soccer-playing nations likes Portugal and Brazil.

“We plan to use Copa Lagos 2013 to compensate for missing out on the World Cup. Senegal, who beat us 9-8 in the African qualifiers to the World Cup played in Morocco in August, will be in Lagos for the tournament and we want to show them that Nigeria is still the best Beach Soccer playing team in Africa,” Olawale said.

“We are all keeping in shape because we know that we have to defend Nigeria in December in Lagos.”

Germany will be making a debut appearance in this year’s tournament while Lebanon and Senegal will also be in contention.

The Sand Eagles captain also downplayed the threat posed by the other teams coming to play at the beachfront of the Eko Atlantic City.

“We have played at two World Cups, so we won’t be surprised by Germany. We played Lebanon at the final of Copa 2012 and they were tough because they were unknown but we know their strength and weaknesses and confident we can beat them again.,” Olawale added.

  1. But when Republican Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst shouted into the microphone, trying to call the final votes, nobody seemed to hear him. Some 400 supporters jammed into the gallery had taken their feet with a deafening roar, drowning out his voice. It was, as some claimed, a “people’s filibuster” — an attempt by protesters to finish what Davis had started more than 11 hours earlier.
