Weightlifting: Lifters Arrive Malaysia.

Nigeria’s weightlifting team to the Commonwealth weightlifting championship holding in Penang, Malaysia arrived the Asian country on Saturday two days before the commencement of action today.

A board member of Nigeria Weightlifting Federation (NWF) Lawrence Iquaibom who led the team out of the country said the 22-man contingent arrived Kuala Lumpur Saturday morning and headed straight to the coastal city of Penang, venue of the championship.

“We arrived Kuala Lumpur in the morning and flew thereafter to the coastal city of Penang where the championship is holding. We have settled down and quite ready for the competition which begins on Monday (today)” Iquaibom told NWF official website yesterday.

According to the ex-international who won silver medal for Nigeria at the Brisbane 82 Commonwealth games, the 14 lifters in the team are in high spirits and determined to do the country proud.

“The lifters are in high spirits and ready for the competition. The lifters are happy with the level of support they are enjoying from the president of Nigeria Weightlifting Federation (NWF) Hon. Chibudom Nwuche and from the leadership of the National Sports Commission (NSC).

The sports minister Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi and the Director General of NSC were part of our open trial in Abuja and they ensured the lifters were comfortable in camp before our coming here for the Commonwealth championship. We hope to do well here and reciprocate their kind gesture,” Iquaibom stated.

President of NWF Hon. Nwuche is billed to arrive Malaysia early this week. Nwuche had last week charged the lifters to do the country proud in Malaysia pointing out that a good outing would be an icing on the cake, following the good run of the country in football.
