Allardyce Downplays Martins-Hammers Link.

West Ham boss Sam Allardyce have distant himself from rumours linking Obafemi Martins with a loan switch to Upton Park during the Major League Soccer (MLS) off season.

With Andy Carroll’s recovery from a nagging knee injury taking longer than expected and without a recognised centre forward aside Charlton Cole, the Englishman has had to call on the services of Ricardo Vaz Te and Modibo Maiga upfront.

Having irked out 13 points from 15 games and sitting just a place above the drop zone, Allardyce has made it clear he would like to strengthen his attacking options in the January transfer window but has been careful to not pay too much attention to media speculations.

Martin, who played under the former Bolton Wanderers manager at Newcastle between 2007 and 2008, has been rumoured to be on the verge of making a return to the Premier League next month since leaving Birmingham City.

But Allardyce said he is unaware of any plan to secure a loan move for the Nigeria international.

“I haven’t heard anything about Oba. He’s playing in America at the moment,” he said.

“Everyone knows if we’re in the market for a player, we’ll be linked with everybody.

“We’ll deal with that- speculation is speculation.”
