The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) at the weekend embarked on mass mobilisation of members not to comply with the ultimatum by the Federal Government to resume lectures by December 4, 2013.
The members of the union were also directed not to sign any register that may be opened by their Vice Chancellors.
ASUU leaders directed all branches chairmen to find means of mobilising their members not to fall for the threats of the Federal Government, describing the threat as “empty”, pending the next National Executive Council (NEC) meeting of the Union, which will be held in Minna.
The Chairmen were also advised not to hold public congresses in order to avoid any face off with police and security forces the government deployed to all institutions for the implementation of the December 4 deadline of re-opening.
ASUU have started using the short message service (SMS) and other social media platforms to reach out and to mobilise members not to succumb to the Federal Government’s threat.
The Nation published some of these SMS:
“Dear members, FG decision to threaten us with sack confirms our suspicion that FG may not be honest and can not be trusted. Don’t sucumb (sic) to this empty threat. The strike continues. We shall triumph again. Please, DO NOT SIGN ANY REGISTER. ALUTA CONTINUA- CHAIRPERSON”.
“Dear Congress member, I’m appealing we should stay calm and remain resolute. There is nothing wrong in asking govt to do what it says it will do immediately. ASUU is not making any new demands as the Minister is propagating Govt is only repeating a ‘one act play’ scripted by the IBB dictatorship in early 90s. It didn’t work then, and, it won’t work now ALL BRANCHES are intact. We cannot be intimidated!!! UNITED WE BARGAIN DIVIDED WE BEG!!! ALUTA CONTINUA”.
A professor at the Federal University of Technology Minna, who spoke with the newsmen on conditions of anonymity, expressed shock over the ultimatum:
“One is shocked by the deadline. If they sack all of us, government will go to Kasua Gwari to pack lecturers or pick Professors on the streets. It is a pity, our leaders are reckless.
“We are not moved by the ultimatum. We are waiting to see how they (govt) intend to wriggle itself out of the self inflicted problem. Do they know how the system runs? The era of intimidation is gone,” the university don stated.
At the same time, University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), and Enugu State University of Science and Technology are set for reopening.

I am in full support of Asuu, if FG will not consider them let the strike continue to date…..this describe our leaders as unjust and the don’t want any development in our country, we are always praying to Almighty Allah to bring change in our country Nigeria.
Federal Government is not sincere to be commited to the agreement reached with ASUU. Both President Jonathan and Minister of Education Wike are bunch of deceits, why should intension of ASUU to make Govt committed to the agreement be misconstrued to another demand.i implore ASUU leadership to stick to their demand to ensure Federal Govt sign formal agreement to ensure commitment. Please don’t beintimidated by that miscreant Wike’s threat.God bless Nigeria.
bullshit bulllshit rede rede
what fg is try 2 do wouldn’t work, fg shud just attend 2 ASUU, rather than d use of threat.
its unfortunatly for FG to force Asuu to resume work, can’t jonathan remember what happened to israelites when there breached their covenant with God , Asuu is fighting for betterment of nigeria through sound education
I pray dat as u start dis first week of d last mnth,God will start with u-blessing and prospering anytin u set ur heart 2do…hapi new mnth #frm vincent
Wicked people! When all of u are ready 2 call off this 6month old strike,u should. I must graduate wether u like it or not.
I dnt understand asuu at all, i dnt think u people are fighting for d betterment of d educational system, ASUU is just being wicked with their selfish interest, i want to graduate ooo
You want to graduate , that is legitimate; but how much have you learnt since you have been staying under trees, stadia and overcrowded stuffy lecture rooms? You want your younger ones to come to this same decayed system, stay and leave empty headed like you are leaving? ASUU is wicked you said; but you are not as good as the man who went to hail, discovered the travail there and pleaded for steps to avert his other five brothers coming there to join him. You are in haste to graduate so empty headed without remembering that the FGN has destroyed economy that your graduating means a leap into hardship; why not join hands with progressive lecturers to inform the so called supervisory minister for education, bar Wike and other politicians or is it looters, that Nigeria belongs to all of us! When will you learn?
Am finding hard to believe dat any. Sensible naija student ĭƨ̣̣̣̇̇̇̇
On ASUUs side. Fø̲̣̣я̅ crying out loud, FG has reachd †ђε̲̣̣̣̥ bridge ǻn̶̲̥̅̊ԃ asuu ĭƨ̣̣̣̇̇̇̇
Jst tryn to rub FGs face. We are losers here, buh asuu wnts to prove otherwise. Ǻn̶̲̥̅̊ԃ FG will confirm it if dey hearken to ds sick unions demand. I dnt care if I stay home till nxt year what’s d difference. If dey need pay let ASUU work. My rent will expire by jan. Ǻn̶̲̥̅̊ԃ I’ll have to renew it again wit A̶̲̥̅ #150,000, having wasted 5 mths rent. Its nt fair. If asuu feels to sack dem fine, I guess dey’ll rest ǻn̶̲̥̅̊ԃ allow d young ones take charge. I wonder if really everyone on ASUUs side ĭƨ̣̣̣̇̇̇̇
Sensible cos I knw dey are jst using students to meet dia selfish needs
You have all spoken your mind. I must say here that FORCE/MILITARY DICTATORSHIP will never never solve the problem. YOU CANNOT PICK A PROFESSOR ON THE STREET!!! The truth is that FG is insincere and unfaithful with ASUU. Let FG act maturely and this problem will be resolved.
Thank you! If our President feels this is politically motivated, let him act maturely first and then let us see how APC or whosoever will hijack ASUU, period!
The fact that everyone is saying one thing or the other is understood, and when someone is saying that he or she must to Graduate, that is true, it will happen no matter what, but if i may express my own opinion on this matter if ASUU just step down now and get back to lecture room, it will only result in you or anyone else graduating to the same system of corrupts people that ASUU is trying to caution now through their peaceful and result-oriented STRIKE ACTION.
remember the success philosophy: “WINNERS NEVER QUITS AND QUITTERS NEVER WIN”.
so i will advise both the federal govt. and the minister for Education to honour their already written agreement because in democracy “FORCE DON’T RULE BUT DIALOGUE DOES”.
Thanks
GOD BLESS NIGERIA!.
Everything is good but not all things are beneficial. This is too much ! A nation withov a leader is doomed & we have our president that has wasted 13 hours sitting together with ASUU members to have a meeting before God & man it’s an “insult” hearken to his “DECISION”.
The president is jst like any other Nigerian moreover he’s an elected president, elected to served not to detect. Why should he or anybody feel that ASUU has disrespect the president?
FG just make me as a person to know that they are all a big fool indeed… Dis is not Military rule, whr dey think they can use Faulse tunz on anyone. Beside, we voted dem in order to satisfy out needs not to Deploy Police, or Army on us when ever we saying our right. Fg, Jonthan is not taking d rit step at all. Let dem go to d street and start picken Lecturers for replacement. Dence fg.
