The Minister for Sports, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, says setting for coach Stephen Keshi a 2014 World Cup target puts him under “unnecessary pressure”.
The Super Eagles have been pitted against Argentina, Bosnia-Herzegovina and Iran in Group F of next summer’s tournament in Brazil, where the African champions will be making a fifth appearance.
Nigeria have not gone beyond the last 16 stage of the World Cup since making her debut in the United States of America in 1994.
Reports suggest the national team handler has been given a semi-final target at the 2014 Brazil World Cup.
The Sports Minister said he also wishes the nation a victorious outing but does not fancy the need for overburdening the team’s head coach with a target.
“What I wish for is for us to win the World Cup and I think that is what every Nigerians wishes for,” said Abdullahi.
“But for talks of setting target for coach Stephen Keshi, I don’t think that is necessary because it would put him under unecessary pressure.”
