The Flamingoes reached the quarter-finals of the previous edition of the same competition in Azerbaijan, where they also played in the same group with Colombia, recording a 3-0 win over the South Americans. Their failure to overcome a resilient French side saw them lose 3-5 on penalties and crashed out in the round of 8 teams.

Nigeria clinched their ticket for the 2014 World Cup ahead of other African representatives following the withdrawal of South Sudan in the last qualifying match.
