Arsenal midfielder Mesut Ozil is likely to miss New Year Day’s home game against managerless Cardiff City because of a shoulder problem.
The Germany international was left out of the 1-0 win at St. James’ Park on Sunday with Jack Wilshere making a return to the midfield. Wenger confirmed after the match that: “Mesut Ozil has a shoulder problem. I don’t think he will be available for Cardiff on Wednesday, maybe after that, we will see.”
Arsenal face Tottenham Hotspur next Saturday in an FA Cup third round tie and the services of the impressive midfielder could be crucial in the North London derby. Arsenal won the corresponding league tie on September 1 and would want to keep title hopes alive when they meet in the oldest football tournament in the world.
Sunday afternoon’s 1-0 win over the Magpies saw Wenger’s men return to the top of the league standing after relinquishing the spot to Manchester City for less than 24 hours.
The Frenchman insists his side has underlined their title credentials with two away victories on the trot, stressing they will continue the “fight” until May.
“There was a big satisfaction because we surprised many people and we want to ogo from there, we played two away games and got six points against West Ham and Newcastle and as you ca see the team is ready for a fight. Let’s keep fighting and trying to develop the team,” said Wenger.
