Bauchi state Chief Judge, Justice Ibrahim Mohammed Zango has reviewed cases of 44 prison inmates and discharged them from Bauchi Central Prison, as part of efforts to decongest prisons.
This was contained in press release signed by the Public Relation Officer of the Nigeria Prison Service Command Bauchi, ASP Abubakar Adam and made available to newsmen yesterday in Bauchi.
According to the release, cases of 44 inmates awaiting trial was reviewed by the Chief Judge and were subsequently discharged.
Justice Ibrahim said prisons congestion can lead to security breach in the state, hence the exercise should be a continuous process.
“It is necessary to call on the stakeholders in the state to look into the issue of administering justice to our inmates,particularly those whose cases have overstayed.It is in this ligth that the decongestion of prisons in the state will not only help to beef up security in the state but will assist the affected inmates to find hope and an opportunity to have a change of lifestyle,” the statement read in part.
In his response, Controller of Prisons, Mallam Ado Ahmed commended the Chief Judge for impacting the lives of the inmates in a positive way, stressing that the gesture will give them the opportunity to have a fresh start in life
