A High Court sitting in Kano has sentenced one Anwar Surah to death by hanging.
Delivering the judgment, Justice Nura Sagir said he was convinced beyond reasonable doubt that Surah stabbed one Muhammad Abubakar in 2010 following the testimony from six witnesses and the murder weapon, a knife tendered in court as evidence.
Justice Nura said he delivered the judgement under 221 of the penal code and the defendant can appeal the judgement.
Counsel to the plaintiff, Barrister Bashir Hassan told reporters that Anwar stabbed Abubakar on his chest and head which resulted to his death in November 2010.
However, counsel to the defendant, Barrister Zaharaddeen M Bello, pleaded with the court to temper justice with mercy as his client has never committed any crime in the past and is a first time offender.
He also described Surah as a peace-loving fellow.
