The Kwara State Police Command confirmed yesterday that the injured policeman in Wednesday’s fracas in Ilorin, the state capital, is dead.
The slain policeman was identified as Agboola Joakim of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS).
A major disagreement on Wednesday between some residents of Abayawo area and hunters at Dada community in Ilorin East Local Government Area, had led to a free-for-all and in the ensuing melee, the late corporal was allegedly injured and was rushed to the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital (UITH), where he later gave up the ghost.
The command added that it had arrested 40 suspects in connection with the crime.
The State Police Public Relations Officer, Ajayi Okasanmi said: “Information was received that some group of thugs engaged themselves in a fight in Abayawo. A detachment of policemen was dispatched to the area to restore peace.
“Suddenly, the mob fired shots directly at the convoy and a bullet hit the late corporal, who was taken to UITH where he was confirmed dead”.
