As part of a bet made during a party to celebrate Orthodox Christmas, two Russian men cut off their own ears following an arm wrestling “tournament.”

Police have not decided if self-mutilation counts as a crime, so it is unclear whether the two Siberian men will face charges.

The two unnamed men were drinking when they came up with the tournament’s odd rules.

“During a drinking party, [two men] decided to hold an arm wrestling ‘tournament’ and according to the rules of the drunken contest, the loser was to cut off his ear,” the police said.

After the first bout, the loser challenged the winner to a rematch and won. Following an argument, the two decided to call the match a draw and agreed to accept the penalty as if they had both lost.

One of the men completely severed his left ear, while the other only partially severed his.

The incident occurred in the southwestern Siberian region of Kuzbass and police only found out about it after the two men showed up at a hospital in the Gurev district with their respective ear injuries.
