Former Governor of Lagos State, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu yesterday reiterated his opposition to the planned national conference, maintaining that it is a waste of time.

Tinubu restated his opposition to the idea in Osogbo, the Osun State capital in a parley with reporters after he held a meeting with leaders of the State chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) and the state government.

The CAN leadership and the state government have not seen eyeball-to-eyeball of late over certain aspects of the Rauf Aregbesola administration’s school reclassification and merger policy.

Tinubu said: “The National Assembly has devoted time to the review of the country’s constitution. What again is the purpose of [Goodluck] Jonathan’s national confab? It is a way of fooling Nigerians. There was no law backing it and whatever comes out of it would be a nullity.

“Those in support of the National Conference are confused people. I am not a confused man, so I cannot support the confab. Those in support have proved to be confused”.

Tinubu, who is one of the national leaders of All Progressives Congress (APC), also gave hint that the process for the emergence of the presidential candidate of the APC has begun even as he assured that the process would be open, transparent and acceptable to all members.

He said the APC was poised to wrestle power from the Peoples Democratic Party-led Federal Government come 2015.

“There has never been crisis in the party and there won’t be any crisis even after the selection of the party’s acceptable candidate”, he said.

He also expressed satisfaction on the successful conclusion of the party’s membership registration exercise nationwide, saying the development was an indication that the opposition party is truly progressive and ready to take over power from the PDP.

On the governorship elections scheduled for June and August in Ekiti and Osun states respectively, the former governor expressed optimism that the APC would remerge victorious at the polls.

He stressed that APC’s dominance in both Southwest states could not be broken by the PDP, due to the popularity the party enjoys among the electorate in those states.

On his chief purpose to Osun State, Tinubu said the crisis bedeviling the education sector in the state had been resolved amicably between the government and the Christian community.

According to him, “Religious crisis cannot occur in Osun state and we shall not allow those behind it to succeed. Education is essential to us and religion is also very important. We shall therefore ensure that the two are not affected. The stakeholders have agreed to give peace a chance in the state.

“Good education is a solution to poverty and we are ready to provide the best for our children. We should not pervert the minds of these young people. Instead, we are ready to provide leadership that would impact positively on their future”.
