The Commissioner of Police in Lagos State, Umar Manko, yesterday, said a total of 472 persons were arrested for armed robbery in the year 2013, in Lagos, while 111 others were arrested for murder.

Manko, said this during a briefing at the State Command Headquarters, Ikeja, adding that 919 vehicles snatched from their owners or illegally removed from parks in the state were recovered.

He also noted that 390 arms and 16,034 ammunition were recovered from armed robbers, while 146 armed robbers, were killed during encounters with the police.

Highlighting how the command coordinated its operations, Manko said: “Since the command was poised to rid the state of criminal elements, we developed some intelligence-driven crime combating strategies under the mission statement ‘zero level tolerance’ for crime which embedded strategies at various levels of execution.

“Right from the State Command Headquarters, State Criminal Investigation Department, Special Investigation Bureau, Special Anti-Robbery Squad, SARS, and the Rapid Response Squad, RRS, which were re-organised and re-invigorated to fall in line with grand strategies to rid the state of criminals particularly in the areas of crime prevention and control.

“In 2013, the command also introduced an internal security scheme known as Operation Shango, Seven City Project and CTU.

“The schemes set out in sequence, actions to be taken by the police and other sister agencies in dealing promptly and effectively with disturbance, riots and other acts of violence,” Manko said.
