FG Advises Bakassi Indigenes To Apply For Nigerian Citizenship

The Federal Government has advised Bakassi indigenes resident in the Peninsula who prefer to be Nigerian citizens to apply for Nigerian citizenship or move back to Nigeria.

The International Court of Justice (ICJ) had in its judgement twelve years ago ceded the then disputed Bakassi Peninsula to Cameroon.

Answering questions from journalists after the opening of the 32nd Session of the Cameroon-Nigeria Mixed Commission (CNMC), in Abuja, the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mr. Mohammed Adoke said, Nigerians presently living in Cameroon have no cause to be aggrieved.

“Why should they be aggrieved, what is the cause of their grievances, If Nigerians in Cameroon prefer to be in Nigeria, they know what to do, they can apply for Nigerian citizenship and if they don’t want to remain there they can move back to Nigeria,” he said.
