Jonathan Splashes Cash On Home-Based Eagles

President Goodluck Jonathan Thursday splashed cash on home-based Eagles that won bronze at the recently concluded African Nations Championship (CHAN) which took place in South Africa.

Announcing the reward last night at a special reception held for the Eagles at the State House Banquet Hall, Jonathan announced a cash reward of N1million for each of the 23 players.

Head Coach of the team, Stephen Okechukwu Keshi, got N1.5m while his assistants, Daniel Amokachi, Ike Shorounmu and Valere Hounadinou got N1m each. Backroom staff of the team were rewarded with N500,000 each.

According to Jonathan, athletes and players should not only be celebrated when they win gold, but also when they put in their best and win something for the country.

He noted that they deserved to be welcomed in a golden way, even though they won bronze for the country.

“We are welcoming them in a golden way even though they won bronze. They did well especially in the game against Morocco to come back from three goals down and still win the game.

“They showed the never say die Nigerian spirit even though we qualified for the tournament for the first time,” Jonathan said.

He expressed hope that the main Super Eagles will play in the final of the next World Cup in Brazil.

While noting that the country was reaping from its investments in sports, the president encouraged Eagles to keep giving their best in future competitions.

Earlier, Minister of Sports, Bolaji Abdullahi, thanked the president for his consistent support for the sports sector, adding that Jonathan is the best leader Nigeria has ever seen in the area of sports.
