Referees, NNL Tensions Derail Football League Start

A CLOUD of uncertainty is hanging over the resumption of the Nigeria National League (NNL) as the referees’ association continues threatening not to officiate in all matches until their grievances were resolved.

The league is scheduled to start on Saturday.

However, concerned match officials insisted that they wanted their case, particularly issues to do with indemnity be addressed as a matter of urgency arguing that working under alleged harsh conditions was a huge risky.

He said his association would withdraw referees ahead of the first matches scheduled for this weekend unless something concrete had been made to ensure indemnity of the referees.

Nonetheless, NNL chairman, Emeka Inyama, maintained that his board had attended to the referees’ concerns.

He said things were as such under control and was hopeful the matches will be played as per schedule.

The commencement of the league has previously failed.

The kickoff was initially set for January 25 but later on postponed to Saturday owing to sharp disagreements between the two parties.
