Why Jonathan Chose Emefiele As Next CBN Governor

The suspension of Central Bank Governor, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi was not surprising to many, but what was surprising was President Goodluck Jonathan’s choice as successor.

Since Sanusi said in an interview few months ago, that he’d love his successor to be announce early, analysts have considered some top bank and government executives as possible choice. Their credentials and informed sources pointed to one of the top executives as a sure replacement for Sanusi, but the president had other plans.

After the surprise nomination of Zenith Bank Managing Director Godwin Emefiele as Sanusi’s replacement, facts have now emerged as to why he was the president’s choice.

Sources said the Zenith Bank CEO was picked as a result of his outstanding character and disposition to professional ethics. His highly principled and independent mindedness apart from the fact that he has not been involved in the banking politics was said to have recommended him for the CBN top job.

On why Jonathan dropped a former top bank executive, touted as a possible successor to Sanusi, a source said he was never in the thinking of government since he has been so much involved in this government.

“Mind you, he is a member of think-tank of the Jonathan government made up of professionals assembled to advise the government from time to time and he has featured prominently in the oil subsidy investigation panel”, one of the sources said.

“So any attempt to pick him would have provoked negative reactions from the opposition and the civil society,” the source told Vanguard.
