Chairman of the Interim Management Committee of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in Kaduna State, Dr. Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, has assured that the party is set for the forthcoming congresses in the state, saying the party’s membership strength in the state now stands at 3.1 million.

Baba-Ahmed also said the state chapter will ensure orderliness during the congresses and that only preferred candidates will take part in the exercise.

The national leadership of APC had after a meeting of its Interim National Executive Committee in Abuja earlier this month, disclosed that its Ward Congress would hold on April 5, Local Government Congress on April 12, State Congress on April 23 while the National Convention would hold on May 24.

Baba-Ahmed, who spoke during a meeting with aspirants in Kaduna, said the party will abide by rules and regulations governing the congresses and guard against malpractice.
Three governorship aspirants and other prospective contestants were among those that attended the meeting.

He added that there were 120 members in each unit while 3.1 million members have been registered throughout the state. He cautioned the national headquarters of the party against involving itself in suspicious arrangements during the congresses, adding that members were already unhappy about alleged involvement of the national headquarters of the party in marginalising state leaders in the previous registration exercise.

“The people, who will be sent from Abuja to monitor the congresses, must show absolute neutrality and competence and if they don’t, they will cause a very serious problem in a key state like Kaduna”.

Baba-Ahmed, who has served at various times as Permanent Secretary in different ministries, warned that the party may lose elections in the state if members perceive deliberate attempts to subvert their will during the congresses.

“Congresses are very important; they allow ordinary members of the party to elect their leaders.  The people will turn against the party if they perceive injustice”, he said.
