The Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, has advised members of the public applying for driving licence and new number plates to desist from patronising touts.

Mr Godwin Ogagaoghene, the Oyo State FRSC Sector Commander, gave the advice on Tuesday while speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria in Ibadan.

He said that instead of patronising touts, applicants should visit government designated offices.

“It is in the process of patronising these touts that the public are made to pay higher and of course, they get fake documents.

“Please insist that you know the officer or member of staff attending to you.

“Be sure that the person is a member of staff of government because if he charges more than the amount stipulated, he knows that you can report him”, he said.

He, however, said with the new plant at the FRSC headquarters in Abuja, the processing time for driving licence had been shortened.

“We still appeal to would-be applicants for the driver’s licence to exercise patience. The process has been made faster and the licences no longer take the usual period of 60 days anymore.

“A new plant for printing the licence has been opened at our headquarters in Abuja and the licences are being produced faster than it used to be”, he said.

He, however, attributed the bottleneck being presently experienced to a situation where a lot of people were applying at the same time.

“Many people are going in for the licence at the same time, but this situation would not be there if everybody goes for renewal of his or licence as at when due on their birthdays.

“We have this bottleneck because everybody wants to do it at the same time”, he said.

He also reiterated that the deadline for motorists with old number plates remains June.

“We expect everyone to have changed their old number plates before the June date”, he said.
