The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mr. Mohammed D. Abubakar has assured Nigerians that the security agencies are working together towards ensuring the safety and security of students and academic institutions nationwide.

He made the statement at the Louis Edet House Headquarters of the Nigeria Police, Abuja, when the staff and students of Pacesetters’ College, Gwarinpa, Abuja, paid a visit.

Mr. Abubakar’s assurance comes on the heels of the massacre of at least 29 students of the Federal Government College, Buni-Yadi, Gujba Local Government Area of Yobe State, by Boko Haram gunmen.

A statement by Force spokesperson, Frank Mba said the IGP cited the concern and directive of President Goodluck Jonathan to the security agencies to do everything humanly possible to ensure that no child, student and their teachers ever come under attack again anywhere in the country.

“The IGP who requested for the observance of a one minute silence in honour of the students who were recently murdered in Yobe State by criminal elements stated that both overt and covert deployment of operatives into schools are being increased while the security agencies are also working with local communities to improve security in and around schools”, the statement said.

The police chief underscored the importance of education in society, and emphasized that it is the only worthwhile legacy any parent or guardian can bequeath to a child or ward.

The IGP further noted the giant efforts his administration is making towards ensuring that the Force is manned by qualified personnel and called on the students to consider taking up a career in the Nigeria Police.

The meeting was attended by senior police officers as well as the staff of Pacesetters’ College, led by Mr. Raphael Adenoye, and members of the press.
