Medical Consultants Threaten Strike Over Alleged Attacks By Lab Scientists

Medical and Dental Consultants Association of Nigeria, MDCAN, in Teaching Hospitals and Federal Medical Centres, has threatened to down tools in protest against the spate of alleged physical attacks against its members by laboratory scientists over disagreement on hierarchy of authority in hospitals.

The group said it would ask its members to withdraw their services if urgent steps were not taken to reverse the trend.

The association spoke to journalists about the plight of medical consultants in teaching hospitals and federal medical centres across the country, the body alleged, in Abuja, that most of its members had been physically assaulted by medical wlaboratory scientists and those sympathetic to their cause.

“In more than ten tertiary health centres across the country, medical laboratory scientists and other support staff that identify with them have assaulted medical consultants, resident doctors and interns,” said
MDCAN President, Dr. Steven Oluwole, and Secretary, Dr. Aderemi Adeosun.

“Many were physically thrown out of the laboratories and barred from carrying out the duties they were duly employed to perform by the government.

“Equipment and buildings have been locked up; reagents have been adulterated among several other heinous acts that should have no place in a civilized society.”

MDCAN added that such an act had led to the death of its member and former Chief Medical Director of Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital, Zaria in 1995, and more recently a gun attack on another medical director.
