A 49-year old pastor identified as Moyo Martins, on Tuesday was arraigned by the Sabo Police Station before a Yaba Chief Magistrate’s Court for allegedly cutting off the fingers of a two-year-old child, Saidat Faleye kept in his care.

The incident, according to PUNCH, occurred on Olumo Street, Iwaya Onike, Yaba, Lagos State.

It was learnt that the victim’s mother, Mrs. Bola Faleye, had left little Saidat in the care of Martins on Thursday, so she could quickly take her birth. While she was gone, the child and suspect were reportedly together alone in his room.

The piercing cry from the child five minutes later, led neighbors to rush in the direction of Martins room.

Mrs. Faleye was alerted and she immediately rushed to the scene in panic only to find where her child’s ring and little fingers used to be dripping blood – Martins had them off.

It was alleged that the suspect sawed off the fingers in his room.

Saidat was reportedly rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment.

It was learnt that the suspect initially feigned ignorance of what had happened but after he was arrested and interrogated, he allegedly confessed that he did it in error and pleaded to be forgiven.

The police arraigned him on a one count charge which reads, “That you, Moyo Martins, on March 6, 2014, about 1.10pm, at 5, Olumo Street, Iwaya Onike, Yaba, Lagos in the Yaba Magisterial District, did use sharp saw to cut off the left finger of one Saidat Faleye, aged 2 years”.

According to the police prosecutor, Mr. F. Ifijeh, the offence was punishable under Section 243 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, Nigeria, 2011.

The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charge and elected summary trial at the magistrate’s court.

The Chief Magistrate, Mrs Y.O Aje-Afunwa, admitted him to bail in the sum of N100, 000 with one surety in like sum while she adjourned the case till April 24, 2014.
