Sultan Laments Killing Of Innocent Citizens, Tasks Jonathan On Ending Insurgency


Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, Saturday appealed to President Goodluck Jonathan, to use everything in his powers to bring an end to mass killings in the Northeast.

The Sultan, who made the remark Saturday, when Jonathan paid him a courtesy call in his palace in Sokoto also noted with sadness, the wanton killings in Northeast, especially the gruesome murder of secondary school students in Yobe state, describing it as worrisome and sheer madness.

“Human life is sacred. I always express sadness over the insurgency in North East and the most worrisome of it is the killing of innocent school children in Yobe.

“This is the height of madness of the insurgency and the killing must be stopped immediately’’, the Sultan said.

The Sultan underscored the need for the President to endeavour to bring all leaders of ethnic nationalities, religious leaders and leaders of political parties to devise ways to tackle this insurgence.

He also expressed worry over threats emanating from various groups and called on the President to ensure a level playing field to all participants ahead of the 2015 elections.

“There should be atmosphere conducive for elections and there must be justice in whatever we do’’, he said.
